Understand a PayPal currency-conversion quote
Multiply the amount being converted by the final quoted exchange rate. To compare offers, express both rates in the same direction and enter only fees charged separately. The starting 0.92 and 0.95 rates are examples, not a live market feed.
Inputs used by this calculator
PayPal Currency Conversion Calculator uses the fields below. The starting values reproduce the page example; replace them with values from the same units and time period before using the result.

Enter the direction of the exchange rate
If you convert dollars to euros, a rate such as 0.92 means one dollar buys 0.92 euros. If a provider displays dollars per euro, invert that number before entering it. Comparing opposite directions can make a worse quote appear better.
The result uses the destination currency's monetary precision. JPY and CLP are displayed in whole units; the other supported currencies use cents. The source amount must already respect its currency's precision.
Read the conversion quote before confirming
PayPal's conversion flow displays the rate before confirmation. Copy the final rate and the currency pair shown for your transaction. This calculator performs local arithmetic and neither obtains a quote nor confirms a conversion.
A balance conversion, a purchase in another currency and a later withdrawal can use different routes. Use the quote for the operation you are actually comparing, rather than a remembered universal fee.
Reproduce the worked exchange example
For the hypothetical USD 100 example, multiplying by 0.92 gives EUR 92.00. The same source amount at 0.95 gives EUR 95.00. Subtracting 92 from 95 gives EUR 3.00 less destination currency under the first quote.
The shortfall percentage is 1 − 0.92 ÷ 0.95 = 3.1579%. This comparison describes these two entered rates; it does not prove that the benchmark was obtainable at the same time or with the same protections.
Rate shortfall = (1 − quoted rate ÷ comparison rate) × 100Avoid counting an exchange spread twice
The final quoted rate may already reflect the provider's currency-conversion pricing. Multiplying by that rate and then subtracting a guessed conversion percentage charges the same cost twice. Enter only an additional fee that appears separately from the rate.
The separate-fee field is denominated in the destination currency. If a charge is deducted from the source balance before conversion, reduce the source amount first. Do not place a source-currency fee into the destination-fee field.
Compare the same amount at the same time
Collect quotes for the same source amount, destination currency and comparable timing. Check whether one quote includes a transfer fee while another lists it separately. A mid-market reference can help describe a spread but is not automatically a retail offer.
A negative rate shortfall means the entered quote is better than the entered benchmark. That is valid arithmetic and should prompt a check of timestamps, directions and included costs, rather than being silently changed to zero.
Separate conversion from payment and withdrawal
For a commercial receipt, calculate payment-processing net first, then use the amount actually being converted here. Calculate a withdrawal separately if a further transfer is required. Keep a short ledger so each stage uses the previous stage's remaining amount.
The model does not estimate future exchange rates or bank arrival times. A quoted result can change before execution, and transaction eligibility remains with the provider. Save the quote date when documenting a comparison.
Illustrative exchange-rate comparison
| Source amount | At 0.92 EUR/USD | At 0.95 EUR/USD | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD 100 | EUR 92.00 | EUR 95.00 | EUR 3.00 |
| USD 500 | EUR 460.00 | EUR 475.00 | EUR 15.00 |
| USD 1,000 | EUR 920.00 | EUR 950.00 | EUR 30.00 |
Frequently asked questions
Are these live PayPal exchange rates?
No. Both rates are editable assumptions. Obtain your final transaction quote before comparing it.
Which direction should I enter?
Use destination units per one source unit. For USD to EUR, enter euros per dollar in both rate fields.
Should I subtract another conversion percentage?
Only if it is a distinct separately charged item. A spread already included in the final rate must not be deducted again.
What does a negative quote difference mean?
The entered quote returns more destination currency than your comparison rate. Check the quote timestamps and included costs.
Where do I enter a source-currency fee?
Subtract it from the source amount before conversion. The separate-fee field accepts a destination-currency charge.
Can this compare conversion by a card issuer?
Yes, if you have comparable final quoted rates and any separate fees. It does not guarantee that either route will be available or cheaper when executed.
What to keep in mind
Enter the final quoted rate in destination currency per source unit. Defaults are hypothetical, not current FX rates. Do not add an exchange-rate spread again if it is already included in the quote. Payment-processing, withdrawal and bank charges are separate.
Results use the selected currency: cents for most currencies, whole units for JPY and CLP. Processing fees are rounded per payment. CSV exports include the entered assumptions and the calculation breakdown. This is a calculation summary, not an official certificate.
