Steps to miles using your own step length

Multiply your steps by your step length in inches and divide by 63,360, the number of inches in a mile. With a 30-inch step, 10,000 steps is about 4.73 miles and one mile is about 2,112 steps.

What the conversion depends on

There is no single number of steps in a mile. The distance of each step, called step length, sets the answer, and it varies from person to person and from a stroll to a brisk walk. This calculator uses the step length you enter, so the result fits your own walking.

How to measure your step length

Walk at your normal pace along a measured distance and count your steps. Divide the distance in inches by the number of steps. A school track lap is 400 meters, or about 15,748 inches; the markings on a football field give 100 yards, or 3,600 inches.

  1. Mark a start line and walk at least 20 normal steps.
  2. Measure the distance covered in inches.
  3. Divide the distance by the number of steps.
  4. Repeat two or three times and use the average.

Step versus stride

A step is the distance from one foot's heel strike to the other foot's heel strike. A stride is a full cycle of two steps, from one foot back to the same foot. Some devices and articles say “stride length” when they mean step length, so a value near 60 inches is probably a stride and should be halved here.

Why your tracker may differ

Phones and fitness trackers estimate distance from a default step length, often based on the height you entered, or from GPS outdoors. Counting errors, arm movements and changes of pace add differences. Entering the step length you measured is the simplest way to align the numbers.

Miles, kilometers and time

A mile is exactly 63,360 inches and 1.609344 kilometers. The walking time shown uses the pace you enter; 3 miles per hour is a common comfortable pace for many adults, but your own pace may be faster or slower.

Putting daily steps in context

Steps are a convenient way to track movement, but health guidance from the CDC is written in minutes of activity per week rather than a fixed step count. Use the distance and time here as a record of your walking, and check with a health professional for personal goals.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,112 with a 30-inch step. Divide 63,360 by your step length in inches for your own number.

How many miles is 10,000 steps?

About 4.73 miles with a 30-inch step, and about 3.79 miles with a 24-inch step.

How do I find my step length?

Walk a measured distance at your normal pace, count the steps and divide the distance in inches by the number of steps.

Is a stride the same as a step?

No. A stride is two steps. If your number is around 5 feet, it is probably a stride; halve it for this calculator.

Does running change the result?

Yes. Running steps are longer, so measure a separate running step length and use it for runs.

How many steps is a kilometer?

About 1,312 with a 30-inch (76.2 cm) step: divide 100,000 centimeters by your step length in centimeters.

Why doesn't my phone match?

It may use a default step length or GPS. Measuring your own step length usually brings the numbers closer.

What to keep in mind

Step length changes with height, speed, terrain and fatigue. A step length you measure yourself is more accurate than a general average or a device default.
