Calorie calculator for maintenance and planning scenarios
Estimate maintenance energy from age, sex, height, weight and activity, then compare maintenance with transparent ±250 and ±500 kcal/day planning scenarios.
Inputs used by this calculator
Calorie Calculator uses the fields below. The starting values reproduce the page example; replace them with values from the same units and time period before using the result.
| Input | Starting example | Accepted value | How it is used |

| Activity level | Moderate — exercise 3–5 days/week | Sedentary — little structured activity · Light — exercise 1–3 days/week · Moderate — exercise 3–5 days/week · 2 more choices | Supplies the activity level quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Planning scenario | Maintenance estimate | Lower by 500 kcal/day · Lower by 250 kcal/day · Maintenance estimate · 2 more choices | Supplies the planning scenario quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
What the calorie estimate represents
Maintenance calories estimate the intake associated with energy balance for the entered profile and activity assumption. It is a starting point rather than a measurement of what one person must eat.
Calorie formula
Resting energy comes from Mifflin–St Jeor. An activity factor estimates TDEE, and the selected scenario adds or subtracts a visible fixed amount.
TDEE=RMR×activity factortarget=TDEE+adjustmentMaintenance, lower and higher scenarios
The calculator offers maintenance and four comparison scenarios. Their names state the arithmetic directly so no weekly weight outcome is promised from a fixed calorie gap.
Worked example
If TDEE is 2,132, maintenance remains 2,132. The −250 scenario is 1,882; +250 is 2,382. The chart keeps all scenarios visible.
Food quality still matters
Calories describe energy, not nutrient density or dietary pattern. Current Dietary Guidelines emphasize nutrient-dense foods and individual needs within overall energy limits.
Adjust carefully
Real expenditure and intake estimates contain error. Watch longer-term trends and how you feel. Seek qualified care for symptoms, medical conditions, disordered eating concerns or substantial planned change.
Scenario arithmetic
| Scenario | Daily change |
|---|---|
| Lower comparison | −500 kcal |
| Gentle lower comparison | −250 kcal |
| Maintenance | 0 kcal |
| Gentle higher comparison | +250 kcal |
| Higher comparison | +500 kcal |
Frequently asked questions
What are maintenance calories?
They estimate intake associated with energy balance under the selected activity assumption.
Does a 500-calorie change guarantee a specific weight change?
No. Bodies and measurements vary, so the calculator labels it only as an arithmetic scenario.
Why is activity included?
Activity is part of total daily expenditure.
Are the results suitable during pregnancy?
No. Pregnancy and lactation need specific energy guidance.
Does the calculator design a meal plan?
No. It estimates energy only and does not assess nutrients or foods.
What question does this Calorie Calculator answer?
Estimate adult maintenance calories and transparent intake scenarios for gradual weight change.
What to keep in mind
Adult planning estimate only. It does not prescribe a diet or establish a safe minimum. Pregnancy, lactation, eating disorders, illness and major weight changes warrant individualized professional guidance.
