How the length converter works

The engine first expresses the entered length in meters and then divides by the target unit's meter factor. This single-base method prevents inconsistent pair-by-pair factors.

Exact conversion formulas

The international inch equals exactly 0.0254 meter. Twelve inches make a foot, three feet make a yard and 5,280 feet make an international mile.

1 in=0.0254 m exactly1 ft=0.3048 m exactly1 yd=0.9144 m exactly1 mi=1,609.344 m exactly

Worked meter-to-feet example

Divide 1 meter by 0.3048 meter per foot. The result is approximately 3.280839895 feet, ordinarily displayed as 3.28084 feet.

Metric prefix relationships

Metric length units scale by powers of ten. One kilometer is 1,000 meters, one centimeter is 0.01 meter and one millimeter is 0.001 meter.

Rounding and measurement precision

Exact unit definitions do not make an original measurement more precise. A board measured to the nearest eighth inch should not be reported with many meaningful decimal millimeters simply because the converter can display them.

Length, area and volume conversions

This page converts one-dimensional length. Area factors must be squared and volume factors cubed, so converting square feet or cubic inches with a plain length factor would be incorrect.

Frequently asked questions

How many feet are in a meter?

One meter is approximately 3.28084 feet.

How many centimeters are in an inch?

Exactly 2.54 centimeters.

How many feet are in a mile?

There are exactly 5,280 feet in an international mile.

Does converting add precision?

No. Report only the precision supported by the original measurement.

Can I use this for square feet?

No. Area conversions require squared factors.

What is the difference between metric and US customary length?

Metric units scale by powers of ten; US customary units use defined inch, foot, yard and mile relationships.

What to keep in mind

The displayed result is rounded to at most eight decimal places.

Results are rounded for display in US format, with money in dollars and cents; CSV exports keep full calculation precision. This is a calculation summary, not an official certificate.
