Weighted grade calculator: your class grade from category weights
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results and divide by the total weight. With homework 92% × 20, quizzes 85% × 15, an 88% midterm × 25 and a 90% project × 15, the products add up to 66.65 points out of 75, so your grade so far is 88.87%. The final exam's 25% is still open: a 90% in the class needs 93.4% on it.
Inputs used by this calculator
Weighted Grade Calculator uses the fields below. The starting values reproduce the page example; replace them with values from the same units and time period before using the result.

How a weighted grade works
A syllabus that says homework 20%, quizzes 15%, midterm 25%, project 15% and final 25% is describing a weighted average. Each category's average counts in proportion to its weight, so a point on a 25% exam moves your grade more than a point on a 15% quiz category.
weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)Grade so far when weights don't add up to 100
Halfway through a term, only some categories are graded. Divide by the weight you have entered, not by 100. In the example the graded weights add up to 75%, so the 66.65 weighted points become 66.65 ÷ 75 = 88.87%. Dividing by 100 instead would wrongly show 66.65%, as if the final exam had been a zero.
What you need on the rest of the class
The ungraded weight is 100 minus the weight entered. Subtract the points you already have from your target and divide by that remaining weight. A result above 100% means the target is out of reach without extra credit; a result of 0% or less means it is already secured.
needed = (target − earned points) ÷ remaining weight × 100Points-based scores and categories
Enter a category score as points (45/50) and the calculator converts it to a percentage before weighting. If your whole syllabus is points-based with no category weights, every point already counts equally: divide total points earned by total points possible with the grade calculator instead.
Category averages, not single assignments
Enter each category's average, not every assignment. If you have four homework scores of 90, 95, 88 and 100, the homework category average is 93.25%, and that is the score to weight by 20%. Some instructors drop the lowest score in a category: drop it before averaging.
Letter grades and school policies
The letter shown uses the common US 10-point scale (A from 90%, B from 80%, C from 70%, D from 60%). Plus and minus cutoffs, rounding of 89.5% and curves are set by each instructor or school, so use the syllabus when it differs. Your course portal is the official record.
Worked example: grade so far with the final exam still open
| Category | Score | Weight | Weighted points | Share of grade so far |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 92% | 20% | 18.4 | 26.67% |
| Quizzes | 85% | 15% | 12.75 | 20% |
| Midterm exam | 88% | 25% | 22 | 33.33% |
| Project | 90% | 15% | 13.5 | 20% |
| Total so far | 88.87% (weighted) | 75% | 66.65 | 100% |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each category score by its weight, add the products and divide by the sum of the weights.
What if my weights don't add up to 100%?
Divide by the weight that has been graded. In the example, 75% of the class is graded, so 66.65 ÷ 75 = 88.87%.
What do I need on the final to get an A?
In the example, a 90% needs 93.4% on a final worth 25%. Enter your own categories and target to get your number.
Can I enter points instead of percentages?
Yes. Type the score as earned/possible, for example 45/50, and it is converted to 90%.
How much will the final exam change my grade?
It moves the grade by its weight: in the example, scoring 84% on the 25% final gives a 87.65% class grade.
Why is my portal grade different?
Portals may count missing work as zero, drop scores, weight categories differently or round. Check the weights in the syllabus and the scores the portal is using.
What to keep in mind
Uses the category weights you enter as straight percentages. Dropped lowest scores, extra credit, curves, points-based syllabi and minimum-score rules are not applied unless you enter the adjusted score.
