How to calculate a tip
Convert the tip percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the selected tip base. An 18% rate is 0.18, so an $85 pre-tax subtotal produces a $15.30 tip when pre-tax is selected.
tip=tip base×tip rate/100Tip before or after tax
Some checks and payment screens suggest a percentage based on the amount after tax, while other diners use the pre-tax subtotal. The calculator exposes that choice. It does not assume that either basis is required or customary in every location.
Worked bill and tax example
For a $100 subtotal, 8% sales tax adds $8. A 20% pre-tax tip adds $20 for a $128 total. If the same 20% tip is calculated after tax, the tip is $21.60 and the total is $129.60.
Split a bill without losing cents
Currency totals are rounded to cents before division. If a total cannot be divided evenly, the result lists how many people pay one cent more so the individual payments add back to the exact bill total.
Quick percentage checks
Ten percent is one tenth of the tip base. Five percent is half of 10%, so 15% is 10% plus 5%, and 20% is one fifth. These mental checks help catch a mistyped subtotal or rate before paying.
Scope and limitations
The tool does not recommend a tipping percentage, identify local sales-tax rules, divide individual menu items or calculate employee payroll and reporting obligations. IRS and Department of Labor links are provided because customer bill arithmetic and employee tip rules are separate questions.
Tip arithmetic on a $100 base
| Rate | Tip | Base plus tip |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | $10.00 | $110.00 |
| 15% | $15.00 | $115.00 |
| 18% | $18.00 | $118.00 |
| 20% | $20.00 | $120.00 |
| 25% | $25.00 | $125.00 |
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the chosen tip base by the percentage divided by 100.
Should tip be calculated before or after tax?
Practices differ. This calculator supports both bases and labels the one used in the result.
How do I calculate a 20 percent tip?
Divide the tip base by five, or multiply it by 0.20.
Does the total include sales tax?
Yes when you enter a tax rate; tax is shown separately even when the tip uses the pre-tax subtotal.
How does the group split handle leftover cents?
It assigns one extra cent to the required number of shares so all payments exactly match the total.
Does this calculate payroll or tax reporting for tipped workers?
No. It only calculates a customer bill; employment and reporting rules require separate guidance.
What to keep in mind
Tip customs and tax treatment vary. This calculator applies only the rates and basis you select. When a group split leaves a cent remainder, the breakdown assigns the extra cents explicitly.
Results are rounded for display in US format, with money in dollars and cents; CSV exports keep full calculation precision. This is a calculation summary, not an official certificate.
