Square footage calculator for rooms and materials
Enter a rectangular length and width in feet, inches, yards or meters. HitEquals reports the base square footage, repeated-area total, allowance-adjusted material area, metric equivalent and optional cost.
Inputs used by this calculator
Square Footage Calculator uses the fields below. The starting values reproduce the page example; replace them with values from the same units and time period before using the result.
| Input | Starting example | Accepted value | How it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 12 | 0.000001 to 1000000000 | Supplies the length quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Width | 10 | 0.000001 to 1000000000 | Supplies the width quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Dimension unit | Feet | Feet · Inches · Yards · Meters | Selects the unit or conversion path used by Square Footage Calculator. |
| Number of identical areas | 1 | 1 to 10000 | Supplies the number of identical areas quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Extra material allowance (%) | 10 | 0 to 100 | Supplies the extra material allowance (%) quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Material price per square foot | 0 | 0 to 1000000000 | Supplies the material price per square foot quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
How to calculate square footage
Measure the inside length and width of a rectangle in the same unit, then multiply them. Choose the unit before entering values. Use quantity when several rooms or panels have identical dimensions.
- Measure length and width.
- Choose feet, inches, yards or meters.
- Enter the number of identical areas.
- Add a material allowance and price if needed.
Square footage formula
For measurements already in feet, the product is square feet. Inches are divided by 12 before multiplying; yards are multiplied by 3. Metric dimensions are converted with the NIST relationship between meters and feet.
area (ft²) = length (ft) × width (ft)total area = area × quantity1 m² = 10.7639104167 ft²Measure irregular rooms
Split an L-shaped or stepped room into nonoverlapping rectangles. Calculate each rectangle and add the results. Do not overlap sections because the shared area would be counted twice.
Openings, permanent cabinets, stairs and partial walls may or may not be deducted depending on the material and installer. Keep the raw measurements so the purchasing assumption can be checked.
Material allowance and cost
Flooring, tile, drywall and other products often need extra material for cuts, breakage, pattern matching and future repairs. The percentage field applies that allowance after multiplying all identical areas.
Cost multiplies allowance-adjusted square feet by the entered unit price. It excludes sales tax, labor, underlayment, trim, freight and products sold only in whole boxes.
Accuracy and unit conversion
Measure at more than one point when walls are not parallel and use a consistent rounding policy. Rounding each small section too early can create a larger purchasing error than rounding the final total.
The calculator preserves conversion precision internally, but a construction estimate is only as accurate as the dimensions, layout and product coverage entered.
What the Square Footage Calculator answers
Measure rectangular square footage, repeat areas, waste allowance and material cost.
Use Square Footage Calculator when you know Length, Width, Dimension unit, Number of identical areas, Extra material allowance (%) and Material price per square foot and need the relationship expressed by the published equation.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square feet?
Multiply length in feet by width in feet for a rectangle.
How many square feet are in a square yard?
One square yard equals 9 square feet.
Can I enter measurements in inches or meters?
Yes. Select the dimension unit and the engine converts both dimensions before calculating area.
How do I calculate an irregular room?
Divide it into nonoverlapping rectangles, calculate each one and add the areas.
Does the cost include labor and tax?
No. It multiplies material square footage by the entered price per square foot only.
What question does this Square Footage Calculator answer?
Measure rectangular square footage, repeat areas, waste allowance and material cost.
What to keep in mind
Rectangles only. Measure irregular areas as separate rectangles and add them; verify product coverage, layout and waste with the supplier.
