What future value means

Future value is the modeled amount at the end of N periods after applying the entered periodic rate and cash flows. It can compare savings patterns that share the same period definition.

Future value formulas

The present value term and annuity term are calculated separately. When the rate is zero, the deposit term simplifies to payment multiplied by periods.

FV=PV(1+i)^N+PMT((1+i)^N−1)/iannuity due FV=ordinary annuity FV term×(1+i)

Beginning versus end payment

A beginning-of-period deposit compounds immediately and receives one extra period of growth. Withdrawals can be entered as negative payments and reduce the projected value.

Worked 10-period example

A $1,000 start plus ten $100 end deposits at 6% per period produces $2,000 of entered cash and about $1,108.93 of modeled growth.

Match the rate to the period

If periods are months, I/Y must be the monthly rate. Convert a nominal annual percentage according to its stated compounding convention instead of entering it unchanged.

What the schedule cannot predict

Real investment returns, inflation, taxes, fees and deposit dates vary. Use this as transparent time-value arithmetic rather than a promise of performance.

Frequently asked questions

Is I/Y an annual rate?

Only if each period is one year; the rate must match the period.

Can the payment be negative?

Yes. A negative PMT models periodic withdrawals.

What happens at a zero rate?

Future value equals starting value plus all payments.

Why is beginning timing larger for deposits?

Each deposit receives one additional period of growth.

Are taxes and fees included?

No. Adjust inputs separately when those amounts are known.

Is future value guaranteed?

No. It is the result of a constant-rate mathematical scenario.

What to keep in mind

The rate is per selected period, not automatically annual. A 6% monthly rate is very different from a 6% annual rate. This constant-rate model excludes fees, taxes and volatility.
