Finance calculator for five time-value variables
Choose one unknown and enter the other four values. HitEquals solves future value, present value, payment, periods or annual return and shows contributions, modeled growth and period-by-period balances.
Inputs used by this calculator
Finance Calculator uses the fields below. The starting values reproduce the page example; replace them with values from the same units and time period before using the result.
| Input | Starting example | Accepted value | How it is used |
|---|---|---|---|

| Periods per year | Monthly | Monthly · Quarterly · Annual | Supplies the periods per year quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Payment timing | End of each period | End of each period · Beginning of each period | Supplies the payment timing quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
Five-variable finance calculator
The five core values are money now, recurring payment, money later, number of periods and rate. Select exactly one output; its field becomes read-only while the other values define the scenario.
Time value of money formula
Present value compounds across n periods. A recurring-payment annuity accumulates separately. Beginning payments receive one extra period of growth.
FV = PV(1+r)ⁿ + PMT × ((1+r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ rperiodic r = annual rate ÷ periods/year ÷ 100Solve inverse values
PV and payment have algebraic solutions. Periods and rate use bounded numerical searches so the same cash-flow equation remains the source of truth.
Beginning versus end payments
End timing models an ordinary annuity. Beginning timing models an annuity due and multiplies the payment accumulation by 1+r.
Projection limits
A fixed return is a scenario, not a forecast. Market returns, fees, taxes, inflation and deposits that change over time can materially alter the result.
What the Finance Calculator answers
Solve future value, present value, recurring payment, periods or return using time-value-of-money equations.
Use Finance Calculator when you know Solve for, Present value, Payment each period, Future value, Number of periods, Annual return rate (%), Periods per year and Payment timing and need the relationship expressed by the published equation.
Variables
| Variable | Meaning |
|---|---|
| PV | Starting value |
| PMT | Recurring cash flow |
| FV | Ending value |
| N | Number of periods |
| Rate | Annual nominal return |
Frequently asked questions
What does a finance calculator solve?
It connects present value, payment, future value, periods and rate.
What is payment timing?
It states whether each recurring payment occurs at the start or end of its period.
Can it solve the return rate?
Yes, using a numerical search from 0% through 100%.
Are periods the same as years?
No. Years equal periods divided by the selected periods per year.
Does this predict investment returns?
No. It calculates a fixed-rate scenario from the values entered.
What question does this Finance Calculator answer?
Solve future value, present value, recurring payment, periods or return using time-value-of-money equations.
What to keep in mind
Deterministic time-value estimate. Returns are not guaranteed; taxes, fees, inflation and changing cash flows are excluded.
Results are rounded for display in US format, with money in dollars and cents; CSV exports keep full calculation precision. This is a calculation summary, not an official certificate.
