Final grade calculator: what you need on the final exam
Subtract the part of the grade you already have from your target, then divide by the final's weight. With an 88% and a final worth 25%, a 90% course grade needs (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96% on the final.
Inputs used by this calculator
Final Grade Calculator uses the fields below. The starting values reproduce the page example; replace them with values from the same units and time period before using the result.
| Input | Starting example | Accepted value | How it is used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current grade (%) | 88 | 0 to 200 | Supplies the current grade (%) quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Final exam weight (%) | 25 | 0.1 to 100 | Supplies the final exam weight (%) quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Grade you want (%) | 90 | 0 to 200 | Supplies the grade you want (%) quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |
| Score you expect on the final (%) | 85 | 0 to 200 | Supplies the score you expect on the final (%) quantity used by the published equation or result breakdown. |

How the final changes your grade
Most courses compute the final grade as a weighted average. If the final exam counts for 20%, everything you have done so far counts for the other 80%. Your course grade is your current grade times 0.8 plus your final exam score times 0.2.
course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × wSolving for the score you need
Turn the same equation around. Take your target, subtract the part already locked in (current grade × the weight of everything else) and divide by the final's weight. The answer is the percentage you need on the final exam.
needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ wWhen the answer is over 100% or below 0%
A needed score above 100% means the target cannot be reached on the final alone; ask about extra credit or aim for the next letter. A needed score of 0% or less means the target is already secured as long as you take the exam. Many courses still require a minimum score on the final to pass, so check the syllabus.
Use the right current grade
Enter the grade your course portal shows for everything except the final. If the portal already includes a zero for the ungraded final, it will look lower than it really is. In a points-based course, divide points earned by points possible so far to get the current percentage.
Letter grade cutoffs
On the common US scale an A starts at 90%, a B at 80%, a C at 70% and a D at 60%, but schools and instructors set their own cutoffs and plus/minus rules. The calculator shows the score needed for each of these common cutoffs; replace them with your syllabus values when they differ.
Planning your study time
Knowing the needed score turns a vague worry into a number. If you need 72% and usually score in the 80s, review is about staying steady. If you need 98%, a realistic plan may be to secure the next letter grade and spend effort where the points are.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate what I need on my final?
Needed score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with the weight as a decimal.
What do I need on a final worth 25% to keep an A?
With an 88% current grade, you need 96% to reach 90%. With a 92%, you need 84%.
Can I fail the final and still pass the class?
Often, if the final weight is small and your current grade is high. Enter 0 as the expected final score to see the result, and check for a minimum-final rule.
How much will the final affect my grade?
Each point on the final moves your course grade by the final's weight: on a 25% final, 4 points on the exam move the grade by 1 point.
What if my class uses points instead of percentages?
Divide points earned by points possible so far for the current grade, and use the final's points ÷ total course points as its weight.
Why does my portal show a different grade?
Some portals count ungraded work as zero or weight categories differently. Use the category weights from the syllabus.
What to keep in mind
Assumes your current grade already reflects every other part of the course and that the final is a straight percentage weight. Points-based syllabi, dropped scores, curves and minimum-final rules change the math.
